FAQ

Common Questions

What Makes Mastic Unique?

Raw mastic is not filled with any toxic fillers, plastics, rubber, or dyes. Mastic gum, also known as mastiha, is a naturally derived sap from the Pistacia lentiscus tree. Unlike conventional gum, Mastic also has numerous gut healing properties, including the easing of ulcers.

What Makes Achilles Mastic of Chios Unique?

Achilles Mastic of Chios supplies straight from Chios, Greece, and onto consumer. Other brands of mastiha may source from Turkey or even Cyprus, and package elsewhere for individual sale. We are shipped mastic resin from our supplier, and we package every order, on demand, on American soil.

Our direct to consumer approach ensures premium product quality, and absolutely no compromises. Mastic is known to melt, like regular gum, at high temperatures. Shipments that come from overseas may be melded together and difficult for the customer to distinguish. We package our gum in individual sealed paper pouches of 20 tears. This enforces cleanliness and is a testament of our strict quality assurance standards. The customer has the choice to create their own storage plans after they have received our gum.

What Should I Expect?

Expect mastiha, a white and clear gum, at your doorstep within a week. Each package is filled to order, and sealed pouches for easy carry-on. Mastiha may provide a satisfying crunch when first bitten down. It is known to soften once in the mouth for about 30 seconds.

Mastic resin has been used from the Greeks, to the Romans, all the way to the Ottoman Caliphs as a medicine and culinary ingredient. We invite you to explore the what entire civilizations have prized and valued.

Why So Expensive?

Mastic gum is only able to be harvested one time in the year. It is most abundant in Greece, and most famously produced on the island of Chios. An ancient and ancestral land, the mastic produced on the island is of unrivaled quality and ancestry.

Additionally, proper farming practices, and caring on behalf of local wildlife sets a proper price premium. The process of extracting the mastic sap is hard work on behalf of the farmers and is uneasy. No pesticides, GMOs or insecticides are used, either. Farmers risk killing the tree if they over-harvest, which has led to a large shortage of available exports allowed by the Greek government.
